Health benefits of Pilates

bow.jpg

The term ‘Pilates’ and the Pilates exercise techniques originate from Joseph Pilates (1880 – 1967), who took influences from a variety of forms of exercise, and who believed that mental and physical health were very closely related. He was born in Germany, but moved to the USA in the 1920s where he taught his method for many years.

Pilates can be beneficial to anyone, from beginners right through to elite athletes, it can also be tailored to people with certain medical conditions. The exercises are easy to pick up and there are many health benefits.

Pilates improves posture, muscle tone, balance and joint mobility, and will help with stress relief and tension. The exercises help reduce back pain, and through the stretching and strengthening of muscles will help you tone up and get in shape.

Some of the key areas that Pilates works are is the core of the back, abdomen, and pelvic floor. These are the muscles we use to support a strong, supple back and good posture, which can be affected by modern day-to-day life. When your core is strong, your body is supported, and the rest of your muscles can relax around it. Another side benefit of having a strong core is the promotion of a flat stomach (or abs).

Pilates is also a great tonic for your mind. By strengthening the body/mind connection you benefit from improved clarity of thought and more sustained mental energy and focus.
